North Carolina covers 53,821 square miles and has a population of 9,848,060 people. North Carolina’s capital is Raleigh, which has a population of 431,746. Other important cities are Charlotte (pop. 792,862), Greensboro (pop. 279,639), Durham, (pop. 245,475), Winston-Salem (pop. 236,441), Fayetteville (pop. 204,408), Cary (pop. 151,088), High Point (pop. 107,741), Wilmington (pop. 112,067) and Asheville (pop. 112,067). North Carolina was admitted to Statehood on November 21, 1789 as the 12th state. The state is bordered by Virginia to the north, Tennessee to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Georgia to the southwest, and South Carolina to the south east. The state flower is the “Dogwood” and North Carolina’s nicknames are the “Old North State” and the “Tar Heel State”. The state’s economy is dominated by agriculture and industry. Poultry and eggs, tobacco, hogs, milk, nursery stock, cattle and soybeans are the primary agricultural products. The main industrial products are textiles, chemicals, electrical equipment, paper and pulp and paper products. North Carolina’s economy also has significant financial and tourism components.
